“When our staff came up with the idea of turning an abandoned rock pit and a weed infested overgrown parcel adjacent to I-75 into a park, you offered your services to us. Our combined goal was to turn 20 acres into a nature preserve to give our residents a place to enjoy seeing what native flora and fauna really looked like. This project was very involved and also very costly and you assisted us with both issues. You assisted our staff with the planning of the park and in writing our application with the Florida Community Trust. We were awarded a $500,000 grant from Florida Community Trust and $195,000 in grants from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The Sawgrass Sanctuary Park was dedicated in January 2003 and immediately received acclaim. In fact, Sunrise received an “American’s Crown Communities: award from American City and County magazine and was selected to be featured on the cover of the awards issue.”
